Toward a Greater Union with God

 vision-of-the-empyreanPrayer: What is the Goal?

 1. Quote from Juliana of Norwich – 14th Century English Saint:
“The whole reason why we pray is to be united into… Him to whom we pray.”

 2. Quote from Saint Bonaventure – Follower of Saint Francis:
“Our final goal is union with God, which is pure relationship…”

 3. Quote from Madame Guyon – Experiencing The Depths of Jesus Christ:
“As you come into the deeper level of knowing the Lord, you will eventually come to discover that the Lord naturally draws you more and more toward Himself.”

“We come now to the ultimate stage of Christian experience: Divine Union. This cannot be brought about merely by your own experience. Meditation will not bring Divine Union; neither will love, nor worship, nor your direction, nor your sacrifice… Eventually it will take an Act of God to make Union a reality.”

“Then let us agree on this: There is Divine Union, and there is a way. The way has a beginning, a progress, and a point of arrival. Furthermore, the closer you come to the consummation, the more you put aside the things that helped you get started.”

There Is a Quiet Place

God is a consuming Fire! But in Him, just as in the midst of every storm, there is a center of quiet. It is “The Eye of the Storm”. God holds you as the “Apple of His eye”; He so desires that you should move from tumult into His center. Of course, if He is living inside us, then we can find this place inside us — at our center.

Just as there is a progression in Moses’ Tabernacle from the Gate to the Most Holy Place, so there is a progression from the Way in, to the place of ultimate communion with God within each Believer.

The key is waiting on God — go to the secret place with Him; shut the door, and in the quiet give yourself wholly to God. You may feel nothing at first, but if you persist in coming to His presence and quietly waiting there, He will respond by drawing you deeper and deeper into Himself.

There is a place where God dwells in us, and in that place with Him there is perfect peace, perfect wisdom, perfect abundance and more.

A Prayer For Quiet

From Prayers From the Heart by Richard Foster:
“Dear Lord Jesus, once You spoke peace to the wind and waves. Speak Your shalom over my heart and mind. I wait silently…patiently. I receive into the very core of my being Your loving command, ‘Peace, be still.’

I wait for You here…

  1. Sweet meditation. I love Richard Foster, and the contemplative classics are refreshing to my soul.

  2. When two people are married in the church, they transform into a mini-church, a little Orthodox community of their own family. The relationship is beyond a legal contract, deeper than an emotional infatuation, because it has a sacramental nature. It’s a mysterious relationship that is transformed by Christ himself. Marriage is for the Orthodox Church a spiritual path, a seeking after God, the mystery of oneness and love, a preparatory image on earth of the Kingdom of God. This is why the metaphor of marriage is so frequently used in relation to Christ and ourselves (the Church).

I have many e-books out, just go to the tab marked “Books” on the blog home page. All of the books listed are available in e-book format.

I have written as a guest on another blog, and in an e-zine. I would consider it an honor to collaborate in any way.
